Seam of Change
2025
Printed flag
5’ × 10’
Seam of Change was created for States of Change, an outdoor flag exhibition at Spruce Street Harbor Park in Philadelphia. Selected as one of 16 winning proposals, this work responds to the exhibition’s call to reflect on change, resilience, and urban transformation.
The flag features a bold “cut and stitched” composition: brown on the top and blue on the bottom, representing Philadelphia’s layered identity. The brown recalls the city’s industrial legacy—its factories and working-class past—while the blue gestures toward renewal, with waterfront spaces like Spruce Street Harbor Park symbolizing reconnection and revitalization.
Reversed ovals cut through both color fields, echoing the shifting rhythms of the cityscape. The stitched divide suggests not rupture but resilience—a city in motion, holding together its history and its future with intention and care.
The flag will be on display at Spruce Street Harbor Park from May 31 through August 31, 2025. Free and open to the public.
